edgar || age unknown || the ancient ghost || while his backstory is unknown and the details of his death are a secret that no one's been able to discover, it's clear that edgar came from a time that was many centuries before any real modern civilization. still stuck in his old ways that he feels safest in since the modern world is something he has no desire to learn, nor does he have any desire to leave the world to move onto the afterlife. his bizarreness that anyone who may encounter him is usually enough to keep those people away from where he haunts, but that's what he claims to prefer. even if there is a part of him that would like a companion to make things a little less lonely for him while he remains in this strange and unfamiliar world. || fc: nicolas cage

frankie steele || 18 || heteroromantic || the brat heir || frankie is the son of a powerful crime family who's known by just about the entire city of new york for more than just their name. what looks like a life of chaotic luxury to the public is much different to the sole heir to the family business, frankie. to him it's a life of neglect that started when he was just a kid and would continue well into his teenage years. so often he was left on his own to be cared for by maids while barely getting to know his own parents who just let their son do whatever he pleased. this was something he took full advantage of and with him being the son of such a high profiled family, it wasn't long until the once mild-mannered boy became a spoiled brat who basically took over the city that he would make his playground.

it was after being caught hacking the company of businessman cillian price that he was brought to the man's office with a job offer that involved him hacking for him while getting involved in the man's scheme to get back at those who wronged him. since frankie was basically free to do whatever he wants and doesn't have to abide by the laws, frankie saw nothing wrong in joining cillian and his assistant, x. with cillian as his mentor and boss, frankie may just learn how to put others before himself and put his skills to good use so he can help bring justice to those who deserve it.

help3r || the hacker's assistant || help3r is a droid that was completely crafted and designed by x who decided the best way to have an assistant for his work was to build one, preferring a droid over a human one. one might assume x has little interest in forming any kind of connection ( or as much as one can have with a droid ), but help3r has proven to be a good source of companion for the hacker who is otherwise isolated when he's not with other people. designed to store data and help out with other technological things around x's lab, help3r has been known to enjoy the presence of new and recurring people whom the droid knows as allies and will think of them as friends.

sofia cortez || 32 || heterosexual || the crime princess || sofia is a young woman who came from a humble background where she worked to make a life for herself while dreaming of a better future where she could make it big in the world. life was relatively quiet for the first twenty or so years until she began working at a nightclub shortly after turning twenty-one. it was during her time working as a bartender that she met cillian price, a handsome and successful businessman whom sofia quickly fell for. their relationship soon took off and sofia was introduced to a life of luxury and crime that she couldn't get enough of.

life was good with her and cillian for several years until she was lured in by mykel stark, another businessman whose mysterious charm and dark demeanor made sofia want more that she had with cillian. it was his involvement in crime that she found fascinating enough to assist him in the downfall of cillian and the young hacker known only as x. while they didn't fully succeed their goal, sofia and mykel did enough damage to weaken the man and the once humble sofia is ready to show the world that she's more than a pretty face. || fc: selena gomez

x || 35 || homosexual / demisexual || the man with the computer || x is a mysterious hacker whose identity has been wiped by him, leaving nothing to know about him besides the enigmatic name he goes by and the fact that he's a hacker. where he came from and what he did in his past is known only by him and is something he'll never disclose to anyone. unable to trust anyone enough to open himself up for love or close connections, he only works for ceo businessman, cillian. the two of them are only partners in crime despite his feelings for the older man that he chooses to keep to himself while focusing only on work that he gets from those he chooses to seek out. not wanting to give his heart away and have it be something he begins to regret. || fc: ben whishaw

dr. robert 'bobby' martin || 40 || homosexual || the compassionate doctor || bobby always had an interest in wanting to help others since he was a young boy which only grew as he got older, making him want to study medicine after completing high school. this was only heightened when his younger brother, elliot, ended up getting sick with leukemia. given how it was stage three and elliot was young, he had no chance of surviving. he was only thirteen when he died and bobby was about to graduate high school.

moving on from the loss in the best way he could, bobby went about making his dreams a reality by deciding to become a family physician who could help children, hopefully better than he tried to help his brother. everything was good for the next few years as he went away to college, but then his parents were killed in a car crash which left the college student as the only remaining member of his family left. with the news bringing his studies to a stop, he dropped out of college and took up drinking instead while living in his old family home.

it was after a car crash that nearly took his life that nearly took his life that got bobby back on track when realizing that he wasn't quite ready to die yet. he took the time in recovery to get his life back together and finish college, albeit he struggled for a bit with limited mobility thanks to his accident. nevertheless, he didn't let it stop him and he eventually became a doctor who specialized in helping children at the local hospital. the same one where the doctors all did their best to try and help bobby's family when they needed help the most. || fc: ben whishaw

issac thompson || 30 || trans masc / pansexual || the vampire writer || unbeknownst to him while growing up, issac grew up as the son of highly profiled politician, richard thompson. a man who was known more for his political views rather than his abusive nature that his various children would endure in different ways. issac was no exception to this and it was perhaps made worse due to him being trans which caused him to become little more than a thing to the man who was really his grandfather.

his mother, skylar, was in fact a sibling to who issac thought were his brothers and sister. the reason for him not growing up with his mother was the fact that skylar had him out of wedlock and richard, not wanting to face a scandal, took issac in while forbidding skylar to stay with him, instead sending him away which resulted in her being turned into a vampire and eventually being put on trial where she was meant to die, but only lost her sight due to exposure to the sun. as for issac, he finally escaped the abuse and found a place to call home while finding a passion for writing about vampires and working at a bookstore. not knowing the whole time that he had more of a connection with them than he thought. || fc: ben whishaw

draco laurent || age unknown / turned at 25 || bisexual || the fragmented vampire || born during the early 1800s as the older brother to a younger sister, draco was always given responsibilities that he was meant to uphold while helping around the home. it was a simple enough life for the middle-class boy who wanted his own life outside of his new orleans home. while he adored spending time with his younger sister, eloise, draco was always independent which really became evident in his teen years when he got involved in things around the city where he began to make a name for himself and soon grew popular while he worked to make his own future that would involve somehow leaving new orleans to travel the world.

then he met tobias whose mysterious nature lured the young man in, making him think he was safe with the other which would eventually turn out to be false. it was as he got closer to tobias that he met the man's wife, megan whom he started a secret affair with after it was clear that the relationship she and tobias had was nothing but abusive and there was no love. even if he knew it was a bad thing to do, draco grew to love megan and it was when they decided to run away that they had a baby who unfortunately did not survive to childhood. they never got the chance to runaway and instead they were caught and draco was punished for what he did by getting turned into a vampire by the very man he thought he could trust.

things only seemed to grow worse when turned and though he tried to stay on his sire's good side, the love he thought was there began to fizzle out and even more so when he was forced to kill megan, though he was able to bring her back by turning her despite being far too young in his fledgling years to do so. it was doing this that further tarnished his and tobias' relationship until the day when he killed the man which set him free from his sire's torment. years and centuries would pass with many more hardships and conflict along the way, mixed in with broken memories that leave his past a mystery that he still tries to solve to this day. || fc: timothee chalamet

emanuel 'manny' kingsley || 25 - 50 || homosexual || the political assistant || coming from a humble childhood with his adopted parents who gave manny a family when his parents died before he had a chance to fully remember them, the young boy learned life lessons that made him the perfect candidate for the assistant of a politician with whom he had a good bond and made the closeted manny start to question his sexuality without properly being able to explore it. regardless of this he kept wanting to find love and at the same time, make a better future for himself that might help him to achieve more than he had which wasn't very much.

it was as he started working for antown that he grew curious about the world of politics which only made him want to pursue something greater. this only led to him getting more than he bargained for which ended up tarnishing his reputation and he had no choice but to leave something he knew so well, thus living a quieter life that took him from washington to a quiet town in maryland. somewhere he felt more at peace while finding a new path for himself.

something that only worked for so long before he was diagnosed with stage three leukemia. taking away any dreams he had for the future, manny put his life on hold while focusing on his treatments that eventually led to him being cancer free. though even with his time spent going back to life again, he was once again sick years later and it was this new illness that told him he couldn't just put life on hold since there was no guarantee that he'd get better or have another chance to beat something that was only slowly killing him a little each day. || fc: jonathan bailey

aiden campbell || 300+ years old || pansexual || the mind reading vampire || aiden is a mysterious vampire whose human life has never been disclosed aside from him being a father to young rosalind with his wife, elizabeth for several years. their quiet life being broken when rosalind was stolen away in the night and aiden's wife suffered with tuberculosis which ended her life and almost took his as well. while she succumbed to the illness, aiden was saved by a man named stefan who lured the younger man in with the promise of love and a happier life than the one he lost.

believing his lies led aiden to being turned and becoming the fledgling to stefan whose love was only a way to get aiden on his good side. centuries of staying by his sire's side finally came to an end when aiden was able to escape the pain he endured at the hands of the older vampire. finding a better life for himself that kept him in the darkness of nighttime while drawing as little attention to himself as possible. not wanting to relive the trauma of his past that is forever etched on his skin with scars. || fc: assad zaman

How You Choose Your Titles:

It depends, if it’s a main entry into my long running series, they have a naming convention, such as The X Arc, The Lost X. If it’s a mini chapter fic or a one shot I find a song and pick a bit of lyrics that fits. Otherwise, it can simply be a “what it says on the tin” approach.

Complete: Well... I have a lot fo completed stuff, best you go to my AO3 for the full list. BUT, I’ve just finished a new long fic yesterday. Always Been You, a Cassandra Pentaghast / Female Inquisitor modern AU. Now I just need to get it edited. I’ve excited!

Incomplete: Right now, surprisingly nothing that’s incomplete. It’s either done, or I’ve not started it.

Do You Outline?

Yes. I do. But I find whatever I’ve outlined, the characters will throw it in my face and laugh at me once I start writing. So the outline is more like a suggestion. If I get lose pursuing all the random little paths my characters want to traipse down I’ll have the outline as a guide to bring me back to the path.

Coming Soon/Not Yet Started: Well other than Always Been You, I have an MMA au that I can finally, finally get started on. Uppercut is a Ryder and Shepard found family story. And I have a few one shot series that need new entries specifically the Cass/Trev DAI The Sword and The Scabbard series, fReyder The Misfortune of Reyes Vidal series, maybe I’ll write a sequel someone requested for my fRyder/Evfra Andromeda's Skye series. And I have an idea for a new fRyder/Lexi T’Perro fluff series. Yes you read that right, I’m attempting fluff and I have named the series already Sort of Soft.

Then, I have the new long fic entries for my Sara Ryder Trials of Ryder series, Riley Shepard The Lost Daughter series and a sequel to Splintered Minds of the Elements of Ryder series. I have my work cut out for me.

What Really Happened: An Ex-Mentor Versus A Witch Academy

Hello all, welcome to my TED talk about a very recent drama that has cropped up. In this essay, I will explain what happened during the drama, what information I’ve collected, and what the big issues were.

Earlier this very month and near the end of last month, a slew of posts were made from three sides of a drama - @swedishsorceress (Riley), @acturianacademy (during the drama it was mainly run by @starlight-and-coffee, Ambrose, but the other two who run it are Skye and Mickey), and @gingersguide (Sophia). I also collected testimony from @hidingsikki (who we shall call Sikki) and from Ciera on Discord.

I have no connection to any party involved, so my information comes from posts made after the apparent drama. I also reached out to the people involved for more clarification, making it clear that I was a neutral party. Also, I am not making this post just to get attention. I’m doing it so we can all see what happened, what went wrong, and how to learn from it.

The Acturian Academy is run by three people: Ambrose, Skye, and Mickey. Riley was once a mentor but was removed from their position. Sophia was the messenger between the two after the drama escalated. Sikki is another mentor at the Academy. Ciera was once a student of the Academy and is a valued member of my witch Discord server.

I will preface this by saying that everyone I listed was an absolute dear to work with and speak to, and they answered all of my questions and got the screenshots I asked for. Bless them all, and may they not be too angry at me by the end of this discussion/drama/commentary/thing.

(As another thing, thank you to Ambrose for correcting me on Riley’s pronouns when I was unaware of them.)

So what happened? How did this become a drama that dragged a good portion of the Witchblr tag into it?

Let's begin with the posts that were created after the drama from many sides. As I went through Riley's initial post (the first one I linked), it seemed odd to me that Riley didn't screenshot the folder with their lessons in it. Ambrose and Sophia both stepped in and made their own posts and reblogs. They have something in their mentor handbook saying that any lessons given in the server can still be used by them after a mentor leaves, regardless of circumstances:

Sikki backed this information up by providing me with a slightly different screenshot of the same thing.

Sophia spoke to Ambrose and relayed a message to Riley that said that Ambrose had removed all of the lessons ORIGINALLY WRITTEN by Riley, minus a few that were started by or co-taught by another mentor. I can now confirm that Ambrose did, indeed, authorize this.

I reached out to both Ambrose and Riley about why Sophia didn’t just send screenshots and instead copy-and-pasted messages. Riley didn’t know why. Ambrose said that they (Ambrose) had had their screenshots photoshopped in the past to make them look bad in the past and wanted to avoid that happening again.

So why was Riley let go from the Academy?

The Academy has strict inclusion rules - which is a nice thing, to not exclude witches based on religion, gender orientation, sexual orientation, culture, et cetera. However, Riley is a transmed/truscum - they said so in the discussion I had with them and in headers and posts on another blog of theirs. Photos:

None of these beliefs were ever pushed onto students, but a few anonymous students felt unsafe because of it.

According to Ambrose, the Academy fact-checks to make sure that people making claims are actual students of the Academy. They then privately research the claims brought to them and bring it up with the mentor. I have no way of knowing that this is what happened other than testimony, so I’ll take their word on their method in good faith.

This isn't the reason why the drama started, however.

Riley claimed that one of their lessons was uploaded with their name removed after they left. I spoke to Ambrose about this, who claimed that the Academy removes the ex-mentor's name as they were no longer affiliated with the Academy, and the Academy assumed that they wouldn't want their names associated with the Academy after leaving.

Side note: According to Ambrose, an ex-mentor staying in the Google classroom after being asked to leave the Academy was a violation of their terms. Riley apparently did this to see the lessons, but I can't say for sure as I was not present in the classroom.

Ambrose said that the request for all of the mentor's lessons to be removed is something that doesn't happen in the Academy - in Ambrose's words, “mentors are supposed to leave all of their work with the academy after termination/leaving”. Riley demanded that their work be removed. After a lot of back-and-forths, Riley's lessons were eventually removed.

But wait, there’s more.

I found it interesting that the Statement of Ownership was so hard to find, so Ciera sent me a PDF copy of the student manual (bless her for hanging onto the student manual when everyone else seems to just delete theirs). The 2019 Student Handbook I have access to is 16 pages long and has a great focus on the students, not mixing in the information that’s only for the mentors.

The Academy is very open and accepting, according to their vision and belief statements. However, going through it, the Statement of Ownership is nowhere to be seen, so the regular student wouldn’t know that lessons would be used even after a mentor leaves. It’s not a big deal, but it’s still something to be aware of.

Also if you look in the manual that I’m seeing, you see that one of the teachers is named Jasper, but I swear it’s not me, it’s a different Jasper.

Complaints About the Academy: What You Hear in the Tea Room

This is probably a weird title for a subchapter that has almost nothing to do with the drama itself, but a common complaint I’ve found regarding the Acturian Academy is that they go through mentors like water.

Considering this seems to be a volunteer-based organization, that doesn’t surprise me. Volunteers come and go, and it takes a long time to build a core group of supporters.

So what did we learn?

Well, lesson one is definitely “don’t be shady” and lesson two is “run better background checks”. This situation was caused by miscommunication, flared temperaments, and people being too quick on the trigger on both sides.

“But Jasper!” y’all may be saying. “Who do you think is right?”

I started off in this drama as a neutral party. Through talking with those involved, I reconsidered my stance quite a few times. But now, in the end, I believe I’m right back where I started: as a neutral party who sees both sides.

In the defense of the Acturian Academy, I understand wanting to have an open and safe environment for beginning witches or ones who want to learn things more in-depth. Having a teacher with views on the lines of a transmed goes against that idea and may make students feel unsafe.

But in the defense of Riley, I understand not wanting your hard work to go uncredited, particularly when you run or co-run no less than (in the handbook I’m looking at) four lessons for the Academy.

In the end, this drama was dumb. Credit is due where someone made something, and the Academy taking this “unless they specifically ask us not to, we’re taking their names off of the lessons they make after they leave” stance is something that they should talk about and maybe change. As for Riley, they have their own thing going on from what I see of their timeline, so good for them. Maybe they’ll become a mentor again one day, maybe they’ll start their own academy thing, who knows.

To everyone involved and those that weren’t, see this as just a learning experience. Take what worked, think about what didn’t work, and change yourself and your groups for the better.

Please don’t hate me for making this post, it was an interesting drama and I wanted to dig deep into it.

i’ve had so many characters it’s hard to even remember them BUT I SHALL TRY.

cait scott, a character from a wip of mine who won a contest to appear on a teen television show and was catapulted to fame (i’ve toyed with revamping her and bringing her here also yes her name was a play on ‘great scott!’)

madison caverly, my very very first rp muse. i made her on an oc blog in 2013 and she was my first foray into the rp world. she’s got a few flaws but i have an immense soft spot for her and i brought her over to indie with me.

nadia johnson, my character that i made for my very first d&d campaign. i quickly fell in love with her and even though we’re not playing that campaign rn, i brought her to indie and she’s one of my favorite characters i’ve made for anything. she’s so resilient and brave and has so many layers i have to explore.

owen wheeler, one of my first characters i made on this blog. i had no idea what to do with him until @warmhcney suggested this plot idea and suddenly, owen sprang to life. he’s now a real person in my head and i can never go back. my life has been changed by him, as weird as it is to say. thank you, del, for suggesting owen and molly, because without them i wouldn’t have owen as he is today.

silas trask, another one of my early muses for this. i honestly don’t know where the idea for him came from, really. but he’s honestly a person of his own and a lil shit. every time i write a reply for him the words fly off my fingers, his sassy retorts taking shape on their own. he makes me laugh every time, and i love him so much.

max wheeler, my lost boy. i made him for a group rp and then i realized… dude. what if he’s owen’s younger brother? the rest is history. max is constantly searching, constantly hurting, constantly falling apart. and god, he just needs to be loved. this is just my daily reminder how much max needs love and it’s also an excuse for me to cry about him, thank u.

Project Echo, Part 1: Chapter 3 (Intel)

Part 1 Summary: A long-buried Hydra disaster, a monster in the shadows, a missing child. Eight months after the events of “The Winter Soldier”, Bucky turns himself in to the Avengers on one condition: They must help him find a girl snatched off the streets by Hydra seven years ago. In their quest, the Avengers accidentally unleash a horrifying creature of darkness and shadow, intent on making their quarry its prey.

Chapter 3: Intel

"Oh yeah, I can tell you're really suffering."

Sam turned away from Skye's tablet just in time to take a duffle bag full in the face. He fell off the stool he was perched on and landed painfully on the floor of the shipping crate. He jumped to his feet, ready for a fight, but held back once he identified his "attacker".

Steve had showered and changed into civvies (more to cover up the stench from spending hours in a soggy uniform) and carried with him his own duffle bag. He had no less than eight pizzas and four plastic bags of soda, plates, and popcorn in the other arm.

While his friend's smile was polite as he approached, Sam got the impression he was a dead man walking.

"Doing alright?" Steve was tense in what to him was a den of enemies. His eyes searched for any sign of a trap and his body was tensed for a fight.

"No," Sam replied honestly- the SHIELD agents were securing the last of the files upstairs and were, for the moment, out of sight. The electroshock chair was already gone, thankfully, "I can't find anything on our lead. I really do think we should consider going with them. I got a call from Nat earlier, she's vouching for their lead agent. I seriously doubt it's a trap."

"I don't care. We're not risking it. We can't trust these people," Steve said.

"Captain Rogers!" Tripp came down the ladder, guiding some sort of vertical lift that was supporting an entire file cabinet down. He quickly came to the corner where Sam and Steve were and offered a hand, "I'm Agent Tripplet Jones. You knew my grandfather, back in the day."

Steve set his duffle down and obligingly returned the handshake, then froze at Tripp's name. His face broke into a massive grin the likes of which Sam hadn't seen in months, "Gabe Jones? You're Gabe Jones' grandson? You two could be twins! Sam, his grandfather was a Howling Commando!"

It was night a day- the Steve who entered the shipping crate and the one meeting the grandson of a long-dead friend. Yes, Hydra had poisoned SHIELD, but a Howling Commando’s loyalties could never be questioned.

Sam tried to hide his triumphant smile, "I guess this SHIELD might not be Hydra in disguise after all."

Steve ignored Sam and beamed at Gabe, "Your grandfather saved my butt more times than I could ever count! Is Bea your grandmother? What was his name… Donnie! Was Donnie your father, or did they have more kids?"

As Steve and Tripp swapped Stories of Gabe and his wife, Sam wandered over behind Steve. He flashed Tripp two thumbs up. There was no doubt now that Steve would at least give SHIELD a chance.

"We're almost done loading up, are you two joining us or not?" Agent May interrupted. Behind her, Skye was doing her best to look like a serious agent and not an Avengers fangirl.

Steve hesitated, glancing between Tripp, Sam, and Agent May, “Nat vouched for her?” Sam nodded and he sighed, "We need intel... I don’t suppose we have any other choice."

"Then get in the jet and we'll head back to our Bus. I've arranged for you- and only you- to meet with our Director as soon as we arrive," Agent May said.

"Do you allow food on the bus? I brought pizza for everyone," he offered, lifting his other arm (as if they couldn't see 8 pizza boxes). "They’re ransom for Sam."

"That's all I'm worth to you? Eight pizzas?" Sam snapped with mock outrage.

"I got a Hawaiian one. Plus the pizzeria gave us popcorn too."

"In that case, god bless."

Steve spent the quick hop to the "Bus" (which turned out to be a SHIELD cargo plane) chatting with Skye and Tripp while Sam got to know Simmons and Fitz. The team was everything the Avengers were not- unity being the most obvious feature. Even the strict Agent May seemed more of a mothering figure once you got to know her a bit.

They all joked as the jet flew deep into the ice fields and once it docked with its mother ship they moved down into the living quarters and began on the pizza, sodas, and popcorn. It made for a fun and almost family-like atmosphere.

Simmons helped Fitz cut his pizza, Tripp unceremoniously tore the crusts off his pieces to hand to Skye, who deposited half of her green peppers on his plate in payment, all without breaking their conversations with the two Avengers or one another. Their closeness wasn’t feigned, but instinct. They were a family.

Once their lunch was finished May directed Steve and Sam to remain in the living quarters while the rest of the crew emptied out the contents of the Quin-Jet and completed final checks on the anchors holding it to the hull before takeoff.

"I'm sorry for snapping so much," Steve rubbed his eyes as exhaustion caught up with him, "you're a good friend. You've already gone above and beyond, helping me look for him. I shouldn't be such a dictator."

"I would have left off the 'tator' bit." Sam chuckled, "Nah, man, I get it. If it was Riley I'd be chasing him down just as hard. Judging by that chair I saw you-know-who has to be the longest serving POW in history. The way I look at it it's my duty as a soldier to bring him back."

Steve sighed, "This isn't the first time we've had this conversation."

"Well, maybe now that we’re giving SHIELD a chance, it can be the last."

Steve moved over to sit on a low couch. The two Avengers waited in comfortable silence for Agent May to ready the bus for flight.

Nearly 24 hours after they'd gone out to the bridge to finalize plans for the barge raid, the strain finally caught up with Steve and Sam. By the time Agent May made it to the bridge they were both asleep in their chairs. They remained that way- Steve with his head on the table and Sam stretched out across the seats- until the plane landed at home base.

May woke the duo several hours later, “Agent Wilson, Captain Rogers- we’ve arrived.”

Sam groaned on the couch and tried to stretch. His arm and leg were asleep in his suit- unlike Steve he never got the chance to change. He propped himself up with one eye half-open, his body tingling painfully, and with angry red lines crossing his neck where the suit had dug in.

Steve, capable of sleeping just about anywhere, was more graceful in the wake-up than his companion. He sat up and brushed his sandy blond hair aside, model-perfect.

"Agent Wilson-"

"Not an agent," Sam mumbled as he tried to remember where he was.

"Mr. Wilson- Agent Jones will escort you to our locker room. You can shower and change there, then he'll take you to the archive. Captain Rogers, you'll meet with our Director and brief them completely on your mission. If the Director agrees then you will be given a team of Agents to help go through our files. If not, you and Mr. Wilson will be given 24 hours to find what you can and then you will be escorted to a neutral location of your choice."

"You had me at 'shower'," Sam shook out the tingling in his leg and stood.

Steve took a deep breath, gathered his bag, and followed May out of the plane.

He was resigned to meeting the Director. He didn't have to be enthusiastic about it. He tried to think back over the SHIELD agents he'd had contact with, but most were now confirmed Hydra. Alexander Pierce had made him into as much of a asset as Bucky.

The thought made his blood boil. Any semblance of peace he’d found on that jet evaporated.

SHIELD's base turned out to be fairly small compared to the others Steve and Sam had raided. Of course, now that they were a so-called terrorist organization it wasn't like they'd be moving into another massive Triskellion-esque facility anytime soon.

The hanger was equipped to handle two planes the size of Agent May's "Bus". There were a few Quin-Jets sitting around, but for the most part the other half of the hanger doubled as a gym. A dozen agents trained in hand-to-hand and boxing, just like Steve had once upon a time.

Heading through the base Steve was struck by how familiar it all looked. Labs, meeting rooms, storage, and living quarters were all crammed together and vied for limited space- the closeness was only magnified by the sheer number of Agents trying to navigate their work spaces. It wasn't claustrophobic though. Rather... nostalgic.

"This facility belonged to the Strategic Scientific Reserve, once upon a time," May noticed the pained look in Steve's eyes, "they used to build everything from the same blueprints. The idea being-"

"-if you've been to one base you can find your way around all of them." It looked so much like the place he, Bucky, Peggy, and Howard had been stationed at during the war. If he didn't know any better he'd have thought it was the same base. But that place, if it still existed, was lost somewhere in the French Alps. He'd tried tracking it down when they first went after Bucky, but the entrance was gone.

But if this was a different facility, what gave it the right to show him so many painful memories? What gave the ghosts the right to come out?

Peggy wasn't standing there in the meeting room consoling him after Bucky’s death, she was in a nursing home in D.C. lost somewhere in the past. Howard wasn't in the lab cooking up some new weapon- but his son probably was. The Howling Commandos were all in their graves, not the equipment room gearing up. And Bucky- his best friend was out there somewhere, lost and angry, not by Steve’s side where he belonged.

Red Skull took most of his life. Zola the rest.

"I'm not meeting your Director," Steve stopped abruptly. He wasn't going to let history repeat itself. It wasn't worth it to trust SHIELD and risk them turning on him once they realized there was a second super-soldier on the board, "The Avengers will handle this."

Steve turned around and came face-to-face with one last ghost- the SHIELD agent he let down before the Battle of New York.

"I know," Coulson smiled, "I look good for a dead guy."

Steve could only stare, "You're alive?" He shook his head and growled, "Fury." Steve turned and slammed his fist into the wall- a bit less satisfying than the target he wanted, but he wouldn't be the one to put Coulson back in his grave.

"I'll have that dent framed," Coulson smiled, "the agents will get a kick out of it. Avenger damage adds a touch of class to the joint."

"Did Loki ever even know you existed, or was all that a ploy to get us to work together?" Manipulated at every turn. By SHIELD, by Hydra-

"I was dead," Coulson was calm in the face of Cap’s rage, "For about two days, actually. We developed a project, T.A.H.I.T.I., after you were thawed. Pseudo-science capable of bringing back the dead- only to be used in the event of an Avenger fell. I shut the project down. Fury brought it back, then he brought me back."

"Is it-"

"-it's no longer in play. It was destroyed. Utterly. No chance of replication."

"It had better be gone," Steve growled. The last thing SHIELD or Hydra needed was the ability to raise the dead.

Coulson nodded, "Don't tell the other Avengers, by the way. Agent Hill says you're still not the most cohesive unit. It’s better to be a dead mascot than alive and Avenger-less."

"Of course Maria Hill is still SHIELD," he snapped. She was Tony's employee, technically, but in truth worked with all Avengers either helping plan missions, gather intel, or seeking out persons and items of interest.

Right now she was supposed to be scanning Hydra intel to get a lead on Loki's missing staff. Steve made a mental note to yank her off that project as soon as possible, in case she just handed it back to SHIELD.

"We aren't going to interfere with the Avengers in any way," Coulson offered. "I promise you that. My call to Maria came after Agent May said she was bringing you and Mr. Wilson in. It was idle friendly gossip, nothing more.”

The fall of SHIELD alone hadn't been enough, but it isn't really just one straw that breaks the camel's back. It's a million working together.

Coulson could see it in Steve clearly, the darkness of someone who'd been through too much. People tended to forget the Avengers were human too. Steve had no grasp anymore of why he was fighting, he just knew that he was. A shadow like that could very easily devour a man.

"Doesn't matter whose side Hill is on. I'm done with secrets, and I'm done with SHIELD. We'll find the intel some other way." Steve turned around to find his way back to the Bus. He was grabbing Sam and-

"Do you think you can get the intel before Hydra finds Bucky?" Steve froze, "We've got people inside Hydra. We already know what they did to James Barnes. Hydra's been on high alert since the Triskellion. We might know more than you at this point. Did you know he wiped out facilities in Russia, Sweden, South Africa, and the Rocky Mountains?"

Steve turned to face Coulson, "Do you know where he is?" his voice was ice.

"No, but if you trust us we might be able to help you figure out where he is heading. He's running from Hydra, SHIELD, and the Avengers. He may be unstable and you can sure as hell bet that he's lethal.”

“You just want to use him-”

“We want him off the streets before anyone gets hurt. That’s it. You can have him. Bucky Barnes is an American hero, no matter what they turned him into. We’re just trying to bring him home.”

Technically Coulson had never lied to them, but Steve still didn’t know if he could trust him. He barely knew the guy for three days before he "died", but the others loved him- even Tony.

Clint roomed with him at SHIELD Academy, Natasha considered him a friend, and even Thor respected him…

Steve hung his head. He had to roll the dice.

"Project Echo," he said at last, "Bucky took that file from the barge and nothing else that we know of. From what we know it's been off the books for 5 years, but it was important to him for some reason. He killed everyone on that ship, wiped the computers, but Sam thinks it was as much about that file as it was revenge."

Coulson nodded, "Alright, we'll help you figure out what he's doing. I'll send half a dozen agents to the records room to help you with your search and another six to digitize them and run keyword searches," he held out a hand and, after consideration, Steve shook it. "Peggy Carter made James Barnes a SHIELD agent posthumously so that he would be included in our Wall of Valor. We protect our own, Steve."

"He isn't going to SHIELD."

"The Avengers are technically a SHIELD team. If he's with you he is in SHIELD custody." This whole thing was an apology, and so Coulson was willing to bend the rules for the Avengers.

Coulson was looking ahead- SHIELD hadn't exactly welcomed Skye openly once the other faction learned about her abilities. The Avengers would be the safest place for her should the issue ever arise again. He needed an IOU from Captain America to shield his friend.

Still weary of a double-cross, Steve watched Coulson carefully.

At this point he'd run out of patience, but he owed it to Sam to finish this once and for all. They bickered constantly, but he still knew who his friends were. Steve just wished he could be sure Coulson counted among those ranks.

Just because he was a fan didn't mean he wouldn't stab Steve in the back if it looked like it would benefit him.

I don't even remember when I became the pessimist, he thought sadly as he reached out and shook Coulson’s hand.

"I've got something," Sam frowned as he flipped through a binder of Hydra memos from one of the bases Bucky wiped out. The binder was massive, and he was going through it page by page, but they were being thorough.

Sam had placed sticky-notes inside to act as markers and he flipped through them, "Five memos just say 'Project: Echo failed, advise,' and I have four, 'Failure unacceptable, proceed as planned'. The last reply though is, 'Director Pierce to oversee termination, stand by’. It’s not much, but-"

"-it's more than any of us have found. Put it on the board," Steve nodded to a large cork board with the few pieces of evidence they had (most taken from the barge in Alaska by Sam): The empty hanging folder, a one-page medical brief on the Winter Soldier, and a directory of Hydra Asset ID numbers with Bucky's highlighted.

"I've got something too," Tripp had the binder with messages from the base in Gallivare, Sweden. He glanced up at Bucky's Hydra ID to verify, "'Project: Echo termination complete' sent from his ID."

"If the Winter Soldier completed a termination order it means we're probably talking about a human project." Steve sighed, "Whoever they were, they're long dead."

"He has the file, just by looking at it he'd know he's got a cold case on his hands. Still, he took it. Maybe he's not looking for the subject, maybe it's something else."

Skye was in the lab with Fitz, Simmons, and three other agents scanning boxes of files as the team in the records room progressed. She stuck her head in the door and knocked softly, "Captain Rogers? Can I borrow you for, like, five minutes?"

"Don't let him come back without fresh coffee," Sam waved his empty mug at Steve.

"Sure, what do you need?" Steve collected the empty carafe and followed Skye out into the hall.

She was nervous- everyone was around Steve, "I was screwing around- only because the scanner was busy- and I found something you might be interested in. It didn't slow us down, I promise, but-"

"I've been too intense, I know. It's fine. We've been at this for ten hours, everyone needs a rest. Don't worry, please." He'd gotten over a good chunk of his temper- enough to feel guilty towards everyone he'd been snapping at. Especially Sam.

He always felt guilty for snapping at Sam lately.

Skye held out her tablet and pressed play, "Just on a hunch I ran facial recognition with that picture of Bucky you provided, focusing on the Smithsonian exhibit and Avengers Tower after the emergence of Hydra, just in case maybe he went looking for you," she tapped one of about twenty small black-and-white images and it filled the screen.

It was the James Barnes memorial wall in his exhibit. A man stood in front of it- a man who was unmistakably Bucky Barnes. It was like a massive weight being lifted from Steve’s shoulders.

"I can't say if he remembers or not, but he stared at that wall for a good half hour, then spent another four in the exhibit until a security guard sent him out for the night. The only other things he really focused on were the pictures of you before Project Rebirth and the interviews with Agent Carter and the Howling Commandos."

Steve was more hopeful than certain it was Bucky who pulled him out of the Potomac, or that the hesitation before the killing blow on the helicarrier was recognition. Bucky at the Smithsonian seeing who he was and who their friends were- "Thank you, Skye," he grabbed her and pulled her into a tight hug. "Thank you so much."

She was grinning as he released her, "Yeah, well, it was nothing."

"Peace of mind isn't ‘nothing’, it's everything."

For the first time in months, Steve felt like he could breathe again.

The next day they hit pay dirt.

"I'VE GOT IT!" Agent May's excited outburst startled even the SHIELD agents in the room. She slapped down an order form in the middle of the table, "A requisition form for twenty bags of O- blood earmarked for Project: Echo at Hydra facility Astana in Kazakhstan. The order is set for automatic refill on a bi-monthly basis."

They knew Project: Echo involved a human subject or subjects, but what could they possibly need that much blood for?

"Alright, new angle," Coulson broke the silence, "find anything you can on Hydra Facility Astana. Agent May, contact Agent Ivaneau." He looked to Steve, “Hydra put spies in SHIELD, so we put one in Hydra. She might be able to get us a floorplan of the base.”

"I'll update Natasha, see if she can find anything," Sam patted Steve's shoulder as he stood.

"Come with me, I'll show you where your comms will work," May exited with him.

Coulson eyed Steve, "Bucky has been ripping apart Hydra bases. There's a chance Astana is already gone, we just haven't found out about it yet. I hate to be the naysayer, but what's your plan if it's another dead end?"

Steve's heart was still pounding with excitement over the lead, Coulson's worries didn't even phase him, "Natasha is working on Stark. If we can get him on board then I'll be able to go after him with the full might of the Avengers, finally. We'll get Bucky, one way or the other."

"And if he can’t be the Bucky you remember anymore?"

"Then at least he’ll be home."
